The International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) is a United Nations (UN) designated day which was first marked on 1st October 1991 and thereafter declared a special day to be commemorated annually by all UN Member States. Kenya as an active UN Member State observes the day through organizing week long activities in all sub-counties that culminate into a National Rally within an identified County.
The United Nations provides the theme but Member States are encouraged to domesticate it to suit their situation. The theme for this year is “Celebrating Older Persons Human Rights Champions”.
The objective of the day is to: –
I. Use the UN Day platform to create awareness and sensitize the public on the need to appreciate and address issues of Older Persons;
II. Reflect on progress made in advancing the agenda of older persons and ageing population.
III. Mobilize Older Persons for purposes of celebrating them for their contribution and participation in society.
This year, the National celebration will be held in Bomet County on 1st October 2018.
