1. Eligibility

  • Adult Learning and Education in Kenya is open to:
  • Persons aged 15 years and above who missed out on formal schooling.
  • Youth and adults seeking basic literacy, post-literacy, or continuing education (including KCSE equivalency).
  • Learners seeking skills training, life skills, or functional literacy for work and livelihood.
  • No upper age limit.

2. Where to Apply / Enrol

  • Adult Learning and Education (ALE) Centres established in every county and sub-county.
  • County and Sub-County Adult Education Offices (found in County Education Offices).
  • Some community centres, faith-based institutions, NGOs, and CBOs also run accredited literacy centres in partnership with the government.

 

3. Application Process

1. Visit the nearest ALE Centre / Sub-County Adult Education Office – learners are guided to identify the most convenient centre.

2. Fill out a registration form – basic biodata is collected (age, residence, education background, preferred learning times).

3. Placement / Orientation – learners are assessed (informally) to determine their literacy level:

  • Basic Literacy (for non-literate learners).
  • Post-Literacy (for those with some reading/writing ability).
  • Continuing Education (for learners pursuing KCPE, KCSE, or vocational/skills courses).

4. Assignment to a class/learning group – usually flexible (morning, afternoon, evening, or weekend sessions).

5. Begin learning – classes commence as per the timetable set by the facilitator.

4. Requirements

  • National ID card or other form of identification (not always mandatory for initial literacy learners).
  • Commitment to attend classes (attendance is flexible to accommodate work/family responsibilities).
  • Some centres may request a small fee for exams (KCSE registration through KNEC), but basic literacy classes are free in public ALE Centres.

5. Assessment & Certification

• Learners can sit for Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) tests:

o Basic Literacy Certification.

o Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

• Certificates are officially recognized for further education, training, and employment.

6. Special Provisions

  • Flexible schedules (evenings/weekends) to cater to workers, parents, and pastoralist communities.
  • Community-based learning in villages, faith institutions, prisons, and workplaces.
  • Programmes tailored for women, youth, senior citizens, and people with disabilities.
